And Stella Makes Three
By Barbara Capogna Moras
“Find Roxie a Home”. That was the name of the Facebook group where we first saw the adorable picture of what looked like a solid colored beagle. We had been talking about adopting a beagle even though two dogs already occupied our home. Roxie turned out to be a beagle/pit bull mix according to the group. Did we really want a pit bull? They get such a bad rap but with part beagle in her, how bad could she be? But we had been living a comfortable life with our dogs for over 10 years … why on earth would we want another pet?
I contacted the owner about meeting “Roxie” and the rest is history. Of course, Scarlett, a 14- year-old Jack Russell mix and Sparky, a 10-year-old Cairn terrier, weren’t too crazy about their nice, quiet suburban life disrupted by a new puppy! I insisted we didn’t have a choice – we had to adopt “Roxie” – she was on her way to the pound! Her owner brought “Roxie” to us to “test” her interaction with the other two. Things did not go well at first, lots of biting and growling, but it was a done deal. We fell in love with this cute little puppy with the beautiful golden eyes. “Roxie” was named after the “Chicago” character “Roxie Hart”. But we changed her name to “Stella” after the character in “A Streetcar Named Desire” not only to fit in the pattern of our pet’s names starting with the letter “S” but I was also performing in that play at the time at a local theatre. I figured Stella was only 8 weeks old and could adapt to the new name. Also, we could do our best Stanley Kowalski imitation and yell “STELLA” whenever she was being bad. (And boy, have we done that a lot!)
